PADI - Professional Association of Diving Instructors
Each member of the federation has a unique number. Using this number and the name of their instructor anyone can check online if their instructor is actually authorised to teach any PADI courses or conduct PADI programs (e.g. Discover Scuba Diving). This means that your instructor should be in active teaching status. The plastic certificate alone doesn't guarantee that the person in front of you keeps his membership in the training organization current and updated.
Same is true for each specialty course (e.g. Enriched Air Nitrox Diver specialty). Your instructor should have an Enriched Air Instructor level to be able to teach you the nitrox course and certify you.

SSI - Scuba Schools International
Each diving school, or as we call them in SSI - Training Center has a lot of information posted about it on SSI website. Instructors are affiliated with the Training Center they work for. Information typically includes what kind of programs and activities are conducted in the Training Center, its status, contacts and even map with divesites in the area so that you can plan your diving holiday knowing what exactly you can expect to see in our beautiful place.
